When Extraction Is Needed
Removal, only when it is the best option
Tooth extractions often become necessary when there is gum disease, tooth decay or some trauma to the mouth. When possible, it is usually preferred to restore a tooth with a filling, crown or root canal first — however, tooth extractions are sometimes the best option.
Our dental extraction experts will always explain what they find, show you the X-ray and talk you through the alternatives before recommending removal. If a tooth does need to come out, we will also plan how to replace it.

FAQ
Tooth extraction questions, answered
When does a tooth need to be extracted?
Extraction is considered when a tooth is too damaged by decay, gum disease or trauma to be saved. We always try to restore first with a filling, crown or root canal — removal is recommended only when restoration is not viable.
Does having a tooth extracted hurt?
The extraction itself should not hurt. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you may feel pressure but not pain. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does it take to recover from an extraction?
Most people feel substantially better within three to five days, with the socket healing over a few weeks. Avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing and drinking through a straw for the first 48 hours to protect the blood clot.
How much does a tooth extraction cost?
Cost depends on whether the tooth is simple or surgical. Your free exam and X-rays let us quote precisely before we begin. Most dental insurance is accepted and flexible payment arrangements are available.
What are my options after a tooth is removed?
Missing teeth can be replaced with a dental implant, a bridge or a denture. Implants are permanent tooth-root substitutes that do not affect neighbouring teeth. We will discuss which suits your case and budget.
