Veneer Comparison
Porcelain vs. Composite Veneers
Porcelain veneers last longer (up to 30 years), resist stains better and look the most like natural enamel. Composite veneers cost less, can last up to 10 years and are easier to repair. The right choice depends on your goals, budget and how long you want results to last.

The Differences
How Porcelain and Composite Veneers Compare
Porcelain and composite veneers both cover the front surface of teeth to improve color, shape and spacing, but they are made differently and age differently.
Lifespan
Porcelain veneers can last up to 30 years with good care. Composite veneers can last up to 10 years. Habits like grinding, nail biting or chewing ice can shorten the life of either type.
Appearance
Porcelain is custom-crafted and reflects light much like natural enamel, which gives it a lifelike depth. Composite resin is shaped and polished directly on the teeth and can look very natural too, though it may lose some of its shine over time.
Stain resistance
Porcelain is highly stain-resistant, so coffee, tea and red wine have little effect on its color. Composite is more porous and can pick up stains gradually, which may mean periodic polishing.
Repairability
Composite is usually easier to repair. A small chip can often be fixed in the chair by adding resin. If a porcelain veneer chips or cracks, it typically needs to be replaced with a new one.
Cost
At our office, porcelain veneers cost $7,900 to $11,000. Composite veneers are more affordable upfront, and your dentist will quote them at your consultation. Over time, porcelain's longer lifespan can narrow the cost gap. See our full veneer cost guide.

The Process
How Each Type Is Placed
Both start with a consultation and a digital smile preview.
Step 1
Consultation and preview
We review your goals and oral health, then show a computerized preview of your new smile.
Step 2
Porcelain: custom fabrication
Teeth are prepared and custom porcelain veneers are made to match your approved design.
Step 3
Composite: sculpted in place
Resin is applied, shaped and hardened directly on your teeth, then polished.
Step 4
Final check
We confirm comfort, fit and bite. Most smile designs are completed in two visits.
